2010 Libertads Released

2010 Libertads are available, spot + 5-7 FRN's depending on quantity at an un-named popular dealer, probably elsewhere as well soon.

Seriously, why? I like Libertads, I really do. However, I don't see their value over a SAE, Maple or Phil and especially not on par with Kooks, Koalas or Lunars. Am I missing something?

Libertads are my favorites by far. I can't explain the premiums, which is why I don't have that many. But the premiums on ebay are twice as much for the 2010s, about $14 over spot. Go figure.

One thing I do know, the proof 2010 Libertad sure beats the proof SAE!! :sarc:

if you make the trip across the border, it's cheaper.

i did a test run last July 2009. silver was $15; got 4 Libertads for $17 each. i was surprised to see the mark-ups.

If I'm not mistaken, Mexico distributes Libertads through it's banking system. Perhaps the problem with premiums elsewhere is that wholesalers and other resellers can only buy them at "Mexican retail" with a $2-ish premium already factored in their cost-basis. If that is so (and I do not, for sure, know it to be the case or not), then what should be a standard Gov't bullion on par with SAE's and Maples is hampered by the distribution system that focuses only on their domestic market.

I prefer the older, thicker ones, myself. Kinda like pirate treasure. The number I will be buying of ANY at $5-7 over spot? ZERO!

Yeah, SAEs, Maples, Koalas, etc., have fiat monetary values affixed to them e.g. $1 and $5. The Libertad doesn't. If silver ever takes off in a hyper-inflationary environment, you may try to use an SAE to buy something but many will look at you like—"Eh, it says it's only worth a dollar." Here the Libertad isn't handcuffed by an artificial (low) value stamped on the coin.

But, the SAEs & CSMs also have stamped on them the weight & purity of silver content, as do the Phillys.

jf, just making my point to Mr. Grief that while the SAEs, Maples, Koalas, etc., have fiat monetary value shown on the coin that they are just as viable an option for barter as the Libertad. On a side note, is anyone aware that the Pilly was the first EU coin struck in .999 Ag?

But to many people you'll be dealing with in a Weimar or Zimbabwe situation, that may not matter. All they're going to see is $1 or $5. Kind of like a pre-1982 Lincoln penny. To most it's only worth .01and that includes a 1909-s VDB. Even today, try to use that rare coin at a bank, the tax collector's office, average shop or guy on the street, penny slots, a gumball machine, etc. None of them care about the copper content or numismatic value. It's stamped "One Cent" and to them that's what it's worth.

The same argument could be made of a Krugerrand Vs a gold Eagle.

I bought 10 onza coins several years back for about $2 over spot, putting them at the price level of SAEs and Maples, etc. Personally that's the price level I think they belong in. I like them but don't consider them to be premium coins.
